"did you ever..." and "have you ever..."

Hi,

I have a question about the differences between "did you ever" and "have you ever". I have read in other threads that some people said they are quite the same. Is that true? If it's so, why do I still run into questions in which the choices are "did you ever" and "have you ever"?

a. Did you ever take evening classes?
b. Have you ever taken evening classes?

Are they different?

Thanks
