Did was VS Did is

Hi!

As I was having a conversation with a friend -- and being too conscious of my grammar -- I got confused on what verb to use in the sentence "What I did is/was". How should it be used? Thanks much!

I'm sure you want "What I did was etc."

There are certain situations in which the "is" choice would work.

Neither is good english

"what i did" normally goes at the end of a sentence. eg Do you know what i did?

At the begining, why not say "I did" , "I was" , or simply "I (pastence-verb)"

'what I did' I think is the subject.

'is' or 'was' is the verb.

so, one subject and one verb. Both are ok.
