New Years' Eve, I was on the phone with mom at 9:00 pm (PST), and she was surprised that she didn't see the ball drop on ABC. I assumed she'd just somehow missed it, even though the shot of it decending is usually :10+. Watched ABC myself, at midnight, and they cut to the shot of the ball at the :10 mark, but it didn't seem to move and the lights on it actually seemed to go out. Then they instantly cut away from the ball and never showed it, or so much as referenced it, for the rest of the broadcast. I know in past years the ball has been 6' in diameter and has been lowered - by hand - by a group of three teamsters. This year it was 12' in diameter, so what with all the crystal it might well have been too heavy to lower by hand. Did it just malfunction this year? Did ABC somehow drop the ball, metaphorically speaking? Was anybody here, there (as in, in person) to see what really happened? I googled "did the ball really drop?" and got basically nothing - Yahoo answers had the question up but nothing much in the way of answers.
What's up, and is it STILL up?
