Did the author drop the word “protect” here?

Hi, friends. I read the following sentence on a text book:

Once on the calendar, I protect this time like I would a doctor’s appointment or an important meeting.

My question is: did he drop the word” protect” after “I would”? Is it ok to drop the verb here? Thanks!
