Did Or Would

Hello friends,

In the following dialogue A, does the "d" stand for "did or would"? Do the American do that in conversation?

A: How'd you know he was coming down the stairs?
B: I understood what she was saying?

Thank you

Note, however, that the contracted form 'd can only be used for would or had. It cannot be used for did.

In informal conversation, did is sometimes contracted to /d/. This can be recorded in writing as 'd.
