did or would

Dear all,
Jesus gave the demons an order and would not let them speak..
Here,in my knowledge "did not" is correct in place of "would not".
I have seen in many places in the bible "would not". Please explain this.

It is. "would" emphasizes that this was an act of the will, something like refusing to let them speak. In this way it fits well with giving an order.

When he arrived at the house,he would not let anyone go in with him except Peter.
Can we use "would not" in place of "did not"
