Did or has

Tell me, please, which one is correct?

Did it ever happen to you? Or

Has it ever happened to you?

"Did it ever happen to you?" - did [at one point or another in the past] it ever happen to you? Here the person asking the question sees "it" as a one-time event.

"Has it ever happened to you?" - has [in the past and up to now] it ever happened to you?

I prefer British because it's classic. Though, in the context, as you explained it, the other fits more.

I don't believe the two can be used interchangeably. As the other person pointed out, "Did it ever happen" implies that the period of time in which it could have happened has passed. "Has it ever happened" implies that it could still happen.
