Did or had

Hello everyone,

I'm not sure if I have to use did or had to echo the verb in the first sentence in what follows.

- Have you ever owned an actual diamond? And even if you ____, how did you know it was your best friend?

Just to clarify, that is something I might have said to a girl, hinting at the expression "a diamond is a woman's best friend".
I think I have to use did because I have to cover the whole "have owned", but I'm not 100% sure about it.

EDIT: Could have done also be an option?

Can you please help me?

Thank you
H.

"even if you have " is correct. "even if you have done" is also a possibility, but the word "done" is not necessary.

'did' is certainly acceptable, but one can say that staying with "have" is more natural and consistent.

Um, does anyone know what happened to the message that my "It seems that there are differences between US and UK usage" was in reply to? I can't actually remember who the author was now, but it basically said that "did" was used in the US. With its deletion the thread no longer makes sense, or it looks as if I'm referring to what Canadian45 said. Can you delete messages after someone's replied? I
