Can I say,

The hare was fast at the beginning. The tortoise still crawled behind (the hare). The hare took a rest under a tree. Slowly, the hare was asleep.

(b) The hare was surprised and sad because he did not win in the race / did not win the race.

(c) The tortoise crawled behind slowly.
