Can I say,

The earthworm did not have eyes.

The earthworm does not have eyes.

This is gramatically correct, but it reads as though you are talking about one specific earthworm rather than something that is true of earthworms in general. Or about a fact that used to be true of earthworms in general, but isn't true now.
