did not eat / had not eaten

Can I say,

John woke up early in the morning. He went up to the hills. Along the way , he saw a old man. He was as skinny as his bones, because he did not eat / had not eaten for many days.

Hi. did not eat is in the simple past which requires a specific date?
so this in this had not eaten (past perfect) referring to the past would be the correct one?

Generally speaking, that's true.

But it's better to think of it this way. The Past Perfect shows that a past event has importance at some later time in the past.
eg When I saw th
