Did I write this sentence right?

He didn't want to know how much more questions he had to do before the right answer was achieved.

He didn't want ot know how much more questions he had to do before the right answer would be achieved.

I want to keep the sentence in the past tense. Which one should I use? Thanks!!

Even with the correction, I stil don't really understand what this means.



Is the underlying idea that he has to keep answering questions until he answers one correctly?
