Did I use the idiom "ground to cover" correctly in this context?

Also, do I need to have that "I" pronoun or can be dropped?

1. I'm starting to get used to the Java programming language but I still have a lot of ground to cover.
2. I'm starting to get used to the Java programming language but still have a lot of ground to cover.
