Did / Have

I'm confused with what tense I should use with what. I think I know which ones are the preferred usage but are the other ones correct? And what do they mean?

1. Did I tell you about the road block that I had to go through this summer? (I understand this one. It is correct?)

2. Did I tell you about the road block that I had gone through this summer? (With 'had gone' I'm saying 'had gone' happened first before 'did' ?)

3. Did I tell you about the road block that I have gone through this summer? (Is this correct with present perfect? I don't think it is.)

4. Have I told you about the road block that I have gone through this summer? (I have two present perfect's, is that okay?)

5. Have I told you about the road block that I had gone through this summer? (With 'had gone' I'm saying it it happened before somethign else?)

6. Have I told you about the road block that I had to go through this summer? (Okay, I understand this one. It is correct?)

7. I think I know which ones are the preferred usage. (Is this correct? Should 'usage' be 'usages'? If so, why? Isn't 'ones' the subject for 'are' ?)

Thanks.

Jack, I think you made this analysis unnecessarily complex for yourself. Simply think of it this way. Present tense: have to go, eat, sleep, write Different forms of past tenses: had to go, eat, sleep, write have had to go, eat, sleep, write had had to go, eat, sleep, write In other words, go eat, sleep and write do not change forms.

  • Have to stays, but it changes tenses.
  • May be you are thinking of a sentence like: I go.
