What's the difference between "Did you mean water?" & "Do you mean water".

Please explain the differences between DO & DID.

If you are talking about something that happened in the past then use "Did you mean...?"

If you are talking about something in the present then you can use either. "Did" feels less direct and more courteous (though "Do" is not in any way impolite).
