Did anyone even SEE Brokeback Mountain?

Question

Lots of jokes, but I'm asking an honest question here, did the first tent scene seem unmotivated to you? I am really curious because my writing group is so evenly divided, the chicks saying yes it was unmotivated and the dudes saying hell no, it was right there on the screen!

Thanks for comments from anyone who has actually seen this.

I"m sure someone did, but it wasn't me. The ads and reviews said "Not worth the money" to me.

It helps to see these characters, I think, in their modern context.

They are not gay.
They are on the Down Low.
At least Ennis is.
He does not see himself as queer. Jack agrees, I think, in that famous scene, because he doesn't want to lose Ennis.
Jack has plenty of "sly looks." Ennis does not.
Jack is serially homosexual with other men, but Ennis chooses only Jack, albeit infrequently.
Ennis chooses Jack in the tent because he wants somebody, anybody. His inner loneliness, mirrored by his physical loneliness, "motivates" his need.

The sudden action, if you and your group seem surprised by it, is clarified by what has gone before and then what comes after.

It is not articulated in any other "active" word or action before it, unlike "Die Hard" and the other film you mentioned. Clearly John McClane has a relationship with his wife he'd like to fix that's why he's there. He's got kids. We have external reference points.
The story, then, is how both men react, and then act on, or refuse to act on, this sudden choice.

You know, the way you put it makes sense.
What I hated about the movie is how Ennis ruins his life and family over this relationship. And how the movie was promoted as a statement about the "injustice" against homosexual. Yeah, ***. The movie was about a dude who screws up his life and really doesn't deserve sympathy because of the innocent people who loved him, whom he hurt.

I mean, who cares about the movie about that? There's no solution presented. Typical whiny Hollywood ****.
