Perhaps. Perhaps not. Context is required to determine which is more appropriate.

Both are grammatical, though.

Asking seems to me to be an act that occurs face to face with someone at a particular time, so Why did you ask us? seems to be the more useful of the two. At the moment I can't even think of a scenario in which I would use the other one.
