Only after she died did I realize that she was actually a nice person. not realized There's some accent in that did , which wouldn't (for me) exist otherwise to the same extent. It accentuates the fact that indeed I was able to realize the fact.

There's some accent in that did, which wouldn't (for me) exist otherwise to the same extent. It accentuates the fact that indeed I was able to realize the fact.

.

If you delete " did ",

The sentence will be like,

I think it would be understandable, but without did, I would prefer no inversion:
I realized that she was actually a nice person only after she died.

Some would ask for ... she had been a nice person ... as she died.

It's a very formulaic kind of structure. To me, 'did' is necessary. If you want to omit 'did', I'd say you should put the restrictive phrase at the end, ie I realized that she w
