Hello Maxim,

If you are looking for a printed dictionary, I like Langenscheidt. In Germany, you can get the Langenscheidt Maxi Wörterbuch (Englisch-Deutsch und Deutsch Englisch) for about 22 euros.

A special edition of the (far more comprehensive) "Handwörterbuch" was available for roughly 30 EUR. In the meantime, a new edition has been announced and is probably already available (though for 45 EUR), but some stores may still sell the previous one (maybe even cheaper than before). The CD-ROM version of the previous edition is available for 18 EUR at "Zweitausendeins" bookstores (also via Internet).

Yup. Here's a slightly more detailed description of the new edition: http://www.langenscheidt.de/cgi-bin/vlb.pl?src=isbn%3D%273-468-05128-X%27 (Apparently it has become fashionable to bundle dictionaries with unneces...erm...other material, though the new edition is even somewhat less expensive than the last regular edition despite the included grammar booklet.)

There are, however, a few more options in the 50 EUR class: - Pons (2001). Includes a booklet with specimens of letters etc. - see above under "other material"... - Hueber/Collins (2003). Based on the 1999 Collins, it's probably identical to the late Pons/Collins (though the number of pages differs). Comes with a thesaurus, a monolingual dictionary and some other stuff on CD, though not the dictionary itself :-( - Duden-Oxford Großwörterbuch (1999). Comes without any fancy gimmicks, but has a very good coverage of current word usage, IMHO. When it was new, I preferred it over the Pons and the Langenscheidt, but things may look different now that both of these competitors have been revised.

In terms of value-for-money, the Langenscheidt's special edition is the clear winner, especially if you can persuade your bookseller of giving you a discount because the book's out of print, after all ;-)
