Dialogue without quotation marks

Hi

I have seen some novels in which dialogue (direct speech) is written without quotation marks or inverted commas.

Something like this:

She said I want to see the whole world.

But that's not possible replied her younger brother.

Could you please tell me if this is some kind of style?

Thanks,

Tom

I've never seen any published novels that omit all punctuation marks in direct speech. In fact, if I picked one up I'd refuse to read it.
