I'm new to such posts and could not find a way to post a new query; therefore, I'm replying to this one, hoping someone will notice.

I want to help my Deaf, 16-year-old granddaughter, Lia, learn acceptible English language skills. Hers are very poor, although she is extremely bright and capable. This is a common situation with Deaf children in the public schools: they generally graduate from high school with about a fourth grade reading and writing level.

I believe diagraming will help her, but I haven't done it in decades and forget the finer points beyond the basic subject-article-adjective and predicate-helper-adverb formats.

I'd appreciate suggestions on lessons or resources, as well as hearing from anyone who has worked on English language with culturally Deaf individuals (i.e., people whose primary language is not oral/aural.)

Lia's primary, native language is Americal Sign Language. To illustrate, when she talks in her sleep, she signs, as a French girl might speak in French.
