Diagnostic/diagnostics

Hi!

Which is the right expression?:

- molecular diagnostic
OR
- molecular diagnostics (with s)

For example how should it be in the following sentence?:

- "He made a substantial progress in molecular diagnostic(s)."

Is there a difference between diagnostic and diagnostics? Are they acting like nouns or adjectives? I need a little more explanation.

Thank you!
