Devoid

Hi
I have seen a question like this
He watches, his face devoid of emotion, as friends of his step up to take the stage.
Could you please explain why there is no auxiliary verb before the word devoid? Although it somehow sounds fine to me, but I still dont know why. Is it supposed to be "his face is devoid of emotion"? If not, please explain, Thanks.

It is not a verb; 'devoid' is a post-modifying adjective: http://www.onelook.com/?w=devoid&ls=a

It's the main verb of the sentence there.

I have a better idea: please do a google search for 'devoid of' and find some sample sentences that interest you. Post them here and we'll discuss them.
