Hello! Could you help me, please, with a spelling question?

Which spelling is right:

developed
developped
developing
developping

I see mostly one P at the end. Why then? Isn't it the same as "stopped"?

Well, I read if a word ends with the cluster "consonant - vowel - consonant", then the last consonant doubles.

STOP = ...T + O + P
DEVELOP = ...L + O + P

The stress in develop is on the first (some stress the second) syllable, not the last. Perhaps that's why p is not doubled here.

Exactly! Thank you very much! Yes, of course, like in the word "prefer", the stress falls on the last syllable and it doubles in the past: prefer - preferred.
