Develop

"Developed" in, say, "developed countries" is defined as an adjective in dictionaries.

But in origin, is it transitive or intransitive?

OH, or did you mean to say "it ever was transitive or intransitive"?

If so, I said "in origin." What I mean is this. Consider:

The car made in Japan?The car is made in Japan, so the "made" which modifies the noun "car" is transitive in origin.

A sleeping baby?The baby is sleeping, so the "sleeping" which modifies the noun "a baby" is intransitive in origin.

That doesn't seem transitive to me. It seem like a predicate adjective. 'Is' is linking.

I don't feel so. The car is made in Japan...[by Japanese]. Does that seem like a meaningful hidden agent to you?

Hmm...I wonder if that's really the real life other native speakers live (The reason I still don't think the "made" is an adjective is that we cannot say "Cars are very made", can we?).
