Detour/Circumnavigate?

Sometimes in order to make more money a taxi driver would take a longer way instead of going there in the shortest way. Can we say the taxi driver makes a detour/ takes a roundabout route/ circumnavigates us?

Top answer

The best phrase is to say they took a roundabout route or they went the long way. To make a detour - you could say that but it wouldn't necessarily have the same meaning - that would be more if the driver had to take another route because of an outside factor, such as a closed road or a traffic accident. Circumnavigate is incorrect.

  • Circumnavigate is incorrect.
  • It means to go around/travel around the outside of something not just go a long route - for example sailors might circumcumnavigate the globe, or a continent, or an island.
