Determining which noun a modifier is modifying

In the sentences:
1.) Friends of her sisters, who were studying at university, went home.

2,) Friends of her sisters visiting from America went home.

In sentence 1, is the relative clause 'who' modifying sisters or friends?
In sentence 1, is the participle phrase 'visiting' modifying sisters or friends?
