Deter

Hi. Will you please tell me if "deter" is a preferable choice of word in the examples:

1: She would always pick up hitchhikers whenever she saw one. Once she picked up a guy with a very big unkempt beard but not even that could deter her.

2: I wasn't deterred even though my blind date kept mentioning her ex-boyfriend.

The broad idea of deter is that you become afraid of doing something because of the consequences. I don't see what the possible consequences are in #1.
