Detain,Retain,Hold UpWithhold

Hallo Teachers!
I've just come across the following test

1) I know it's late , so I shall not A) DETAIN you any longer, said the sales manager to his sales team.
B)Hold Up
C) Retain
D) Withhold

I am a little lost and I think letter C,is the one that better fits in it.
Please let me know

The correct word is "detain."

"Retain" has the same sense, but we don't use it with people. (The dam retains the water.)
