detail or details

Hi,

1) How are the two words in the subject used differently?

2) Is the following sentence correct? If not, how would you correct it?

Please elucidate the difference (differences?) in (the?) usage of "detail" and "details."

(Isn't the phrase "of "detail" and "details" acting as a kind of a definer and thus necessitating an inclusion of "the" before the noun "usage"? )
