destiny, proverbial

California's destiny is inextricably tied to its economy. In order to live the "California Dream," people have to have access to good jobs that pay well. Otherwise, they cant afford a house and garage and teh proverbial two cars to go inside the garage.

i confused the words, destiny, and proverbial, please help me out

i have check my dictionary but it not make sense to me. please help thanks

The proverbial two cars refers to the fact that it has become a common thing to say that there are two cars in a garage in California. There are actually more cars than people in California.
