Despondent

She was becoming increasingly despondent about the way things were going.

Please help me understand the meaning of despondent. It sounds very similar to 'respondent'. Does despondent mean not being reponsive? like not talking to people and being depressed. Or Despondent doesn't have any relation to Respondent? Thank you in advance.
