Despite oneself?

I have read several stories that use the phrase "despite herself" or "despite myself" and I tried to Google it but came up with nothing. What does it mean?

Very basically, the phrase indicates a loss of control, an inability to resist temptation.. eg I stole the money although I knew I shouldn't. eg I stole the money despite myself.
