Despite

Hello,

Could you please take a look at the following sentence?

"Koala, despite its being frequently considered a bear,

is a vivid specimen of a marsupial."

My major doubts concern the highlighted part, since I'm

not sure whether the gerund is used here appropriately.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Clive,
Don't you think the sentence flows more naturally without "its" ? Or it's my imagination?
