Desist vs abstain vs prohibit

Will you please ___ from interfering in my personal affairs.

a) abstain
b) desist
c) avoid
d) prohibit

ans:- a

I tried to find the difference between 'desist' and 'abstain'. please let me know if my research is not correct.

'Abstain from something' means to avoid doing something enjoyable, but that may not be healthy and MORALLY RIGHT.

e.g you should abstain from smoking.

'desist from something' simply means to 'to stop doing something'

you should desist from investigating further.

'Abstain' is used when we request/advise someone not to do something that might be harmful to his health.

e.g you should abstain from smoking.
you should abstain form alcoholic drinks.

Please let me know if i am correct.

I don't think the poster meant 'Clive'. He has mistaken you for Clive. You signed off as CJ, so the "C" has caused him/her to make the mistake.

B.

The broad idea of the two words is this.
eg I abstain from smoking. I can do it, but I won't.
eg I desist from smoking. I do it, and then I stop.

Hi Clive,

I don't understand second example( '' I do it, and then I stop.'). Could you please illustrate a bit more with examples.

'desist' will fit better in the sentence posted('Will you please ___ from interfering in my personal affairs'). Am I Right?
