Desire override ?

Hi~ I don't understand the structure and meaning of the phrase "desire override" in this context.

Is "desire" a verb and "override" a noun? If so, what does "override" mean?

If not, what does the phrase mean?

If you have any idea, please let me know. Any idea would be welcomed.

Thank you in advance~

The food items widely available at these chains, like cheeseburgers and milkshakes, are like super-foods regarding their caloric quantities. A rat study showed that after eating a high-fat and -sugar diet for 40 days, when deprived of high-fat human junk food, the rats would refuse to eat their healthy food for an average of 14 days. The study concluded that overconsumption of foods high in sugars and fats trigger the same brain circuitry activated in cocaine and heroin addiction. Even more frightening is the finding that overconsumption triggered addiction more rapidly and took longer for the brain’s reward system to rebound when the behavior was terminated than cocaine or heroin. This means overconsumption of foods high in sugar and fat will begin to shift the brain to desire override. The high-fat and -sugar, junk food diet begins to reduce dopamine receptors very quickly.

Hi It is a noun phrase and both components are nouns. It's an unusual phrase but has the same structure as, say, the more familiar phrase 'communication breakdown' (= a breakdown of communication) 'Desire' just means the everyday human desires: to eat a healthy diet, to go for walks in the park, to spend time with friends, and so on. An 'override' is something that suspends or cancels the normal workings of a machine or an organism One of the features of addictive drugs is that they override normal human desires: the need for the drug becomes more powerful than these ordinary desires.

  • As it says in the article, this happens because the drug interferes with how the brain produces dopamine (that is, one of the chemicals in the brain that regulates desire) The article claims that a high fat and sugar diet, such as a person might get from eating too much from fast food burger restaurants, has a similar effect: it causes a desire override.
  • And the author believes that this can be proved by showing the effects of large quantities of fat and sugar on the brain Hope this helps, Dave
