Designated - used correctly?

Hello,

Has the word 'designated' been used correctly? I am not sure whether the sentence conveys its meaning!

Lords is located in the north-west and is designated as a part of the Central Zone at the London 2012 Olympics.

Regards,

Vijay

I think it is overkill, Vijay. Why not simply: Lords is located in northwest London and is a part of the Central Zone for the London 2012 Olympics.
