Design sewn on fabric

Question

"embroidery consists of designs sewn onto fabric."Above sentence is too complex for me to understand.  What does "design sewn on fabric" mean? Would you please explain it?Thank you.

'Designs' is used as a noun here. A design - a symbol, a picture or logo.

'Sewn' - participle of 'to sew'.

'Fabric' is another word for 'cloth'.

So the sentence (and the word 'embroidery') refers to pictures that someone sews onto cloth.

I have to start by saying, I think that designs sewn onto fabric are applique; and that embroidery is designs sewn into fabric

The artist starts with a fairly plain piece of cloth. And then they have a design - a pattern or a picture - that they want to appear on that background. In embroidery, coloured yarns are woven into the background fabric - the coloured yarns go in and out of the background cloth, to build up the patterns and colours that the artist has imagined

In applique, the artist creates the shapes and patterns with separate pieces of fabric and then sews them onto the background

Fabric is cloth. The cloth used for embroidery is special; it has a loose but regular weave.

Sewing uses needle and thread. The verb is irregular. (sew, sewing, sewed, sewn)
