Hi Mr. Wordy,

I'd like to know what exactly "pebbly look" and "pigeon-coloured" mean in the following sentence:

He wears spectacles that have a pebbly look and keeps his pigeon-cloloured hair short.

Thanks a million

Hi Nancy, When you post a new question here there's no need to address it to an individual forum member. Just leave it unaddressed, and whoever is around will answer it (hopefully). "pigeon-coloured" presumably refers to a shade of grey, which is the predominant colour of most pigeons: I personally visualise it as being a darker shade, like the tail feathers of the specimen above, but I'm not sure if everyone would feel the same.

  • It's potentially a bit imprecise because pigeons are not uniformly coloured.
  • "pebbly look" means an appearance somehow similar to pebbles (small smooth stones).
