describing the heart of something

Hi,

Could you please help in the following description?

I want to describe something that is the heart of something, the best part of something.

Specifically, I want a word that describes the best city of a country, the place that the rest of the country revolves around.

This is my attempt.
Sicily is the treasure of Italy.

Another attempt:

Sicily is the heart of Italy. (I don't want it to have connotations of being the middle of the country)

Thank you
