Describing a person as "simple"

Hi. I am trying to edit a text that was sent to me from India. In it, a person is described as "simple," but I don't feel I can use that word, as it can imply that the person is stupid or mentally challenged. I wonder if anyone has suggestions for a word I can use to describe a person who is uneducated and unworldly, without sounding derogatory? Thanks.

In the context you describe, 'simple' seems innocent enough.

Yes, it does. You can also consider 'simple-hearted'. [http://www.onelook.com/?w=simple-hearted&ls=a]
