Deprive

Jim is a poor man who couldn’t arrange three square meals a day by honest means, neither does he have house, bed and clothes. To fend for himself Jim joined a mafia gang. So, can I write the sentence this way, describing Jim’s situation: 'Jim, already being deprived of shelter, bed and clothes, realized if he hadn’t joined the gang, he would have been deprived even of food.'
