deposit

Hi,
under "deposit" comes the following definition:
"A sum of money given as security for an item acquired for temporary use."
Would you please explain with some examples what the definition mean? It seems to me it has the same meaning as rent. Am I right?

When you hire/rent/lease something, you pay for using it. This is the rental charge. You also leave a deposit as security. If you bring the thing back on time and undamaged, your deposit will be returned to you. If the thing is damaged in any way, the cost of repairs will be taken from the deposit.
