Depicted?

Hi, What is the diffrenet between "depicted" to just describe? is there any difference at all? Just doubt I have about this word I have in the text

"Before the war, America had depicted the Soviet Union as almost the devil-incarnate."

Hi Mister, so for the english speaker he will know that "Depicted" implies for "describe in visual element" but the meaning stays the same as in describe... thanks:)
