Depending on is interchangeable with based on?

Hi,

Could a native tell me what they think?

Based on/depending on their position, you know how tall players are.

Thank you

Could a native tell me what they think? Based on/depending on their position, you know how tall players are. 1) "Based on " is a better choice, but I still don't like the sentence very much.
