Dependent clause that starts with "further advancing ..."

Which one of the following sentence correct? (or are they both wrong?) I am not sure what grammar rule applies.
Thanks.

1.)
"The system can be improved, further advancing the technology."

2.)

"The system can be improved, further advance the technology."
