Dependent Clause and coordinating conjunctions.

1.The prisoner completed his sentence and received his freedom.
2. The prisoner completed his sentence, received his freedom.

When we use coordinating conjunctions with dependent clauses/phrases are they compulsory.

What would we class the bolded phrase without the conjunction in rank? Are the conjunctions not just for 'clarity' in these instances or a English grammar rule ?

I checked this resource but it doesn't have my example's usage.
