depend or based? what or how?

= What tells you she's a nice person? Do you choose you friends based on (depending on) how they interact with others?
= How do you know she's a nice person? Do you choose you friends based on (depending on) how they interact with others?

All of your sentences are OK, except it should read ' your friends'. 'Based on' seems more natural to me.
