"depend on" in collocations

I read somebody's essay and they wrote that "this method depends on writing and rewriting the same paragraphs over and ever again." It puzzled me, as i'd say that "it consists in..." Is that sentence correct, as I have big doubts about it?

Your version would work.
There are at least two different senses of "depends."
She depends on her parents for support. (She is reliant on them.)

That depends on how you look at it. (The truth or falsity of something is contingent on etc.)

Now, when i look at it, I can see how it might be interpreted that way. I do not think it is very obvious though. To me, this use is a bit contrived. Don't you have such impression? What word would YOU use in that place? Would you ever use "depend on"?

I think I might.

The race depends on your getting through the slalom gates in record time, without knocking any of them down.

I think this is natural. I don't believe I'd choose "consists in" here, although it's certainly possible.
