Departure time/take-off time

Hello,

Do these synonyms sound natural in these phrases? And is it possible to use 'what' instead of 'when?'

When is the departure/take-off time?

When is the arrival/landing time?

Thanks

Top answer

When is the departure time? When is the arrival time? Those are OK.

  • When is the departure time?
  • When is the arrival time?
  • Those are OK.
  • 'What' is possible but not common.
  • 'Take-off' and 'landing', though their meanings are certainly appropriate, are simply not used among those I know who fly.

I think the reason we talk about "arrival" and "departure" times instead of "take-off" and "landing" times is that arrival and departure refer to the time the plane reaches or leaves the gate -- the times that the passengers can get on or off the plane -- rather than the actual take-off and landing times, which can vary according to weather, airport traffic, etc.
